The Office of International Affairs (OIA) develops and advances initiatives that support the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus vision as a leading public university with a global reputation for excellence in learning, research, creativity, community engagement, and clinical care. OIA partners with the university's schools/colleges and with other university offices to align international student recruitment efforts and services, support academic programs, foster global educational partnerships, facilitate research collaborations and create global learning opportunities.

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) provides expert immigration advice to international students, scholars, hiring units, and the faculty and staff who educate and support them. ISSS is responsible for ensuring compliance with complex immigration rules and regulations when foreign nationals come to the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus to study, teach, conduct research, or engage in other academic pursuits. We engage outside counsel for all employment-based immigration cases.

The International Services Specialist is responsible for providing the services and programs necessary to facilitate the enrollment, sponsorship, and/or employment of international students at the university and to ensure institutional compliance with related federal regulations. The position is responsible for processing various types of immigration casework and advising students and their departments and hiring units on a wide range of immigration, academic, and cultural adjustment issues; providing programs and services regarding immigration regulations, cross-cultural adjustment, academic success, employment issues, and more; liaising with campus stakeholders, and otherwise ensuring institutional compliance while facilitating international student success.

International Services Specialist

What you will do:

Immigration Advising and Casework (60% of Time):

  • The International Services Specialist is responsible for processing a variety of international student casework, including nonimmigrant casework for F-1 and J-1 students and their dependents to facilitate the enrollment and/or employment of international students at CU Denver | CU Anschutz.

  • The International Services Specialist will also provide other immigration-related services, including check-in sessions, advising regarding visa status maintenance and changes of status, travel signatures, reduced-course load authorization, employment authorization, etc.

  • The International Services Specialist is responsible for appropriately and efficiently utilizing the SEVIS and Sunapsis systems to facilitate processing of immigration documents and tracking, as well as required reporting and monitoring pursuant to federal regulations.

  • In close collaboration with other members of the ISSS team, the International Services Specialist is responsible for monitoring ongoing compliance with federal regulations governing the enrollment and/or employment of international students and scholars at the University.

Orientation and Programming (15% of Time):

  • In close cooperation with the International Student & Scholar Transitions and Engagement Coordinator and other campus groups, the International Services Specialist is responsible for providing logistical support for and presenting at various programs and events throughout the year, including but not limited to the following:

    • Orientation programs and activities for international students

    • Information sessions and workshops related to employment .

    • Other programs designed to educate various groups about immigration issues, cross-cultural issues, and international student success.

  • The International Services Specialist is responsible for sharing information with international students regarding relevant programs and activities throughout the University, particularly programs and activities that will allow them to interact with domestic students and experience U.S. culture, and for encouraging them to participate.

Communication and Outreach (15% of Time):

  • The International Services Specialist is responsible for building and maintaining productive working relationships with contacts in an assigned portfolio of schools and/or departments, as well as with other key stakeholders throughout the University.

  • The International Services Specialist is responsible for ensuring that all department contacts in their assigned portfolio are provided with regular updates regarding OIA policies and procedures, changes in immigration regulations, and relevant data about the international students in their areas.

Professional Development (10% of Time):

  • Participate in training to develop knowledge and skills in F and J regulations.

  • Receive mentoring from senior ISSS staff on F and J student advising.

Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in international education, international affairs, international relations, or a related field.

  • One year of professional experience in, or closely related to, international student and scholar services that includes conducting professional presentations and providing customer service to diverse constituents.

  • US citizen or US Lawful Permanent Resident in order to comply with the Department of State and Department of Homeland Security requirement for serving as an Alternate Responsible Office and Designated School Official for the university's J-1 and F-1 program respectively.

Substitution: A bachelor's degree is preferred, or equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience.

Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Master's degree in international education, international affairs, international relations, or a related field.

  • Ability to interpret and apply immigration-related laws, regulations, and procedures in a university environment.

  • 2 years of experience serving as an Alternate Responsible Office and/or Designated School Official.

  • Experience processing casework and advising international students on immigration matters.

  • Experience with SEVIS (RTI and Batch).

  • Experience with Sunapsis enterprise software.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, including interpersonal relations and cross-cultural communications competencies.

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to diverse constituents.

  • Strong analytical skills.

  • Excellent computer skills.

Conditions of Employment

  • This position requires an onsite presence on campus 3 days a week.
  • Occasional work during the evening and/or weekends may be required.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $50,580 - $55,905

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
